Study Says Breast Augmentation Improves Life Quality

Women note significant gains in several key areas

Breast augmentation model measures breasts

Women who had Breast Augmentation reported substantial improvements in key quality of life areas, according to a study reported by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). The biggest increases were seen in breast satisfaction, psychosocial well-being and sexual well-being, with more than 80% of the women surveyed reporting significant improvements in these areas. According to the ASPS, breast augmentation is the most popular surgical cosmetic procedure in the United States.

The new study shows that breast augmentation with breast implants can significantly improve a woman’s quality of life. Breast Augmentation is intended to enhance a woman’s figure by increasing the size of the breasts and reshaping her bust line to bring a more attractive shape to her overall body contour. By enhancing their body shape with breast enlargement, women who were unhappy with the size and shape of their breasts find that they have more options to wear the latest fashions and may experience a profound boost to their sense of self-confidence.

Study reveals improved patient satisfaction with breast appearance, psychosocial and sexual well-being

In recent years, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has urged the ongoing follow-up of women who receive breast implants to document not only the safety but also the effectiveness of breast augmentation. The most recent study – which appeared in the July 2012 issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery – followed 41 women who completed a questionnaire 6 months before and and 6 months after cosmetic breast augmentation using breast implants.

The questionnaire evaluated changes in six areas:

  • Satisfaction with breasts.
  • Satisfaction with the overall outcome.
  • Psychosocial well-being.
  • Sexual well-being.
  • Physical well-being.
  • Satisfaction with care.

The group results showed significant improvement in three out of the six areas. On a scale of 0 to 100, the average scores increased from 27 to 70 for satisfaction with breasts, from 45 to 78 for psychosocial well-being and from 35 to 72 for sexual well-being. More than 80% of the women surveyed reported “significant improvement” in these three areas.

Breast augmentation is the most common cosmetic surgery procedure performed in the United States, according to ASPS statistics, with more than 300,000 procedures performed last year.
