Survey Reports Rise in Worldwide Aesthetic Surgery
The annual global survey of aesthetic and cosmetic procedures shows a 19.3% increase in procedures performed by plastic surgeons in 2021, reports the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS). More than 12.8 million surgical and 17.5 million non-surgical procedures were performed worldwide, an increase of 33.3% over the last 4 years.
Liposuction becomes top surgical procedure
Liposuction overtook breast augmentation as the most common cosmetic surgical procedure overall in 2021 with more than 1.9 million procedures reported. However, breast augmentation remained the top choice for women.
Rounding out the top five most popular surgical procedures in 2021 were eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), nose surgery (rhinoplasty) and tummy tuck (abdominoplasty).
Botulinum toxin remains leading non-surgical procedure
Botulinum Toxin remained the most popular non-surgical procedure for both men and women of all ages, with more than 7 million botox procedures performed by plastic surgeons worldwide. The other top five non-surgical procedures in 2021 were hyaluronic acid fillers, hair removal, skin tightening and fat reduction.
Breast augmentation, eyelid surgery most popular for women and men, respectively
Breast Augmentation continued to be the most common surgical procedure for women in 2021, the ISAPS reported, followed by liposuction and eyelid surgery.
Eyelid surgery was the most popular surgical procedure among men, followed by male breast reduction (gynecomastia surgery) and liposuction.
United States leads world in total procedures
The most cosmetic surgery procedure were once again performed in the United States, representing 24.1% of the worldwide total. The US was followed by Brazil and Japan.
